THE FRENCH ILLUSION by John Grisham

A Paris honeymoon becomes a kidnapping, and the bait is a young lawyer.

Paul and Chelsea Tanner are newlyweds on the trip of a lifetime. Then a day in the French countryside ends in an abduction. John Grisham’s new thriller follows the FBI, CIA and French intelligence as they chase a pattern that points to other couples.

• Open on a nightmare honeymoon. The kidnapping comes early, so the pace is set from the first chapters.
• Follow three agencies at once. The FBI, CIA and French intelligence work the case across borders, which keeps the investigation moving beyond one city.
• Meet the lawyer who becomes the bait. A young attorney is recruited for an elaborate CIA operation, a twist on Grisham’s usual courtroom setup.
• Read it in a few sittings. Reviewers describe it as hard to put down.
• Trust a proven storyteller. Grisham has written more than fifty novels, and his first, The Firm, appeared in 1991.

Good to know

• It’s intense. One reviewer warns that some torture scenes are not for the squeamish.
• It’s less courtroom, more espionage. Grisham is known for legal thrillers, but this one leans on intelligence work.
• Prefer to listen? An unabridged audiobook read by Michael Beck is also available.
